“My Life with Him” – a review from Butaca Teatral
(translated from the Spanish by Stephen Page}
The curtain of the Teatro Margarita Xirgu lifts and the stage comes alive with musicians and actors introducing the audience to the love story between Jack (Carlos Zabala) and Anna (Paula Villanuestre). A burning young love that becomes unrequited and lies dormant for decades in the hearts of the two protagonists over decades until fate strikes with a casual and unexpected reunion.
With brilliant character interaction, an audience member might say that “My Life with Him” is a tender rendering of a universal dream. Fito Paez’s empathic music helps the plot move along by strumming the hearts of the audience, and his lyrics are used for dialogue. The third character in the play Angel (Emma) plays an important Venus/Cupid role, and she deserves the standing ovation she received after the opening show.
“My Life with Him” implements simple scenery and a basic wardrobe. Carolina Papaleo geniusly breaks with the structures of the classic love story, and demonstrates commitment to quality theater.
