The Church of Tango: a Memoir

Saludos desde Buenos Aires!

I just wanted to let you know about my just-published new book, The Church of Tango: a Memoir.
Not a typical tango book, nor a tango history or a how-to, it is my passionate memoir of tragedy and adventure, lust and music, romance and tango, that takes place in four countries. It is my personal story of loss and survival and how I ended up living and teaching tango in Buenos Aires. (I was tempted to subtitle it Death, Dance, Destiny but came to my senses in time.)

It is now available on Amazon in paper and on Kindle.

You can read a review of it here:

Un abrazo tanguero,
Cherie Magnus

(Please forgive me if you happen to receive more than one notice about my book; it’s not intentional. Thanks.)

“My Life with Him” – a review from Butaca Teatral

“My Life with Him” – a review from Butaca Teatral

(translated from the Spanish by Stephen Page}

My Life With Him musicians and actors

The curtain of the Teatro Margarita Xirgu lifts and the stage comes alive with musicians and actors introducing the audience to the love story between Jack (Carlos Zabala) and Anna (Paula Villanuestre). A burning young love that becomes unrequited and lies dormant for decades in the hearts of the two protagonists over decades until fate strikes with a casual and unexpected reunion.

With brilliant character interaction, an audience member might say that “My Life with Him” is a tender rendering of a universal dream. Fito Paez’s empathic music helps the plot move along by strumming the hearts of the audience, and his lyrics are used for dialogue.  The third character in the play Angel (Emma) plays an important Venus/Cupid role, and she deserves the standing ovation she received after the opening show.

Mi Life With Him stage

“My Life with Him” implements simple scenery and a basic wardrobe. Carolina Papaleo geniusly breaks with the structures of the classic love story, and demonstrates commitment to quality theater.

Eternal Youth

By Ricardo Coler

In Vilcabamba Ecuador, people live from one hundred thirty to one hundred and forty years.

The people do not have yearly medical examinations. No one is sick. They smoke, drink and regularly use substances most people think are reserved solely for rock stars.
They live very humble lives, the workers as well as the aristocrats–but they all party heavily.
Watch a video about the book on Youtube.

Ricardo Coler was born in Buenos Aires in 1956. He is a doctor, a photographer, and journalist. His photographs and essays about matriarchal societies—polygamous and polyandrous—have been published in several Argentine and foreign media. He is the founder and director of the cultural magazine lamujerdemivida.

He is the author of The Kingdom of Women (2005) and To Be a Goddess (2006). His books have been translated into several languages.

The Jacarandas are in Bloom

It’s Thursday. Thanksgiving, and we are having a party in my house–whole pig on the spit, barbeque chicken, twenty different salads and side dishes, red wine, champagne, cake. About forty people are here. Everyone is laughing, joking, telling stories. I just snuck away to my writing room and turned on the television to watch American football.  The jacaranda outside my window is in bloom–violet the flowers are.

Last night, around three in the morning, I wrote a couple poems. Then I found on-line this poem:

-a poem by James Tate:

Teaching the Ape to Write Poems

They didn’t have much trouble
teaching the ape to write poems:
first they strapped him into the chair,
then tied the pencil around his hand
(the paper had already been nailed down).
Then Dr. Bluespire leaned over his shoulder
and whispered into his ear:
“You look like a god sitting there.
Why don’t you try writing something?”

-and a moot quote by W.S. Di Piero

“Some shy from putting prose out there because it’s a dead giveaway. You can’t fake it. It reveals quality of mind, for better or worse, in a culture where poems can be faked.”
